The Real Deal | Half the Deal | Revised Deal | Sample Agenda | Participant's Comments

T here are three different types of workshops that we can offer to your high school educators: (If needed, these workshops have also been adapted to the elementary and middle school assessments.)

The Real Deal - this is for educators who are unfamiliar with the Standards, the ELA Regents and developing parallel tasks. More time for curriculum and technology support.

  • This includes a 2 day workshop in which participants become familiar with the ELA standards, the 4 Regents tasks and the assessments. Participants will look at sample tests and writing samples of high school students to understand the rubric.
  • 1 additional day will be devoted to creating one parallel task to be published on the website. Participants use the Internet and text resources to complete their task.
  • 1/2 day will be spent on-line/email/phone sessions ,making additional changes to their task.
  • Schools can send up to 12 participants to these workshops.

"Half" the Deal -this workshop is designed for educators who understand the Standards and the Regents but just want time to create parallel tasks.

  • A day is spent reviewing ONE task and the components that are necessary in making a successful task (Districts may want to designate a task that their students were particularly weak with).
  • Additionally, participants will look at the Internet resources provided for them and create ONE parallel task using Internet and text resources. This will be displayed on the web page.
  • 1/2 day is spent on-line/email/phone,making additional changes to their task.
  • Schools can send up to 12 participants to this workshop.

Sample Tasks from Both Workshops

The Revised Deal -educators design "mini lessons" in helping students meet success with the Standards and the tasks at hand. Classroom strategies and management will be discussed and shared.

  • This one day workshop allows participants to share strategies that work in meeting the 4 ELA standards.
  • Additionally, participants will create mini-lessons on a topic they are working on in class in which alternative strategies and materials will be shared on the web page.
  • 1/2 day will be spent on-line/email/phone, discussing how the lesson worked and what needed to be altered or changed.
  • Schools can send up to 12 participants to this workshop.
  • Example of mini-lessons

Participant's Comments
Let the words speak for themselves!

  • I have been a teacher for 30 years and this is the most productive conference day I've ever had.

  • This conference taught me more about the ELA standards while increasing my knowledge of technology.

  • It was nice to "make and take." I enjoyed sharing my task but also having the opportunity to use other tasks already created.

  • The texts I found on the "Net" would have taken me days - months to find in the library. It was efficient having appropriate resources selected for me.
