Outcomes:
- Students will brainstorm on the immigration theme.
- Students will use listening skills for the goal of understanding.
- Students will utilize cooperative techniques in order to increase understanding and
dialogue.
- Students will practice note-taking techniques during a listening activity.
- Students will engage in extended activities involving interviews and research on famous
immigrants.
- Students will practice dictation skills while developing vocabulary.
- Students will summarize using notes obtained from a listening activity.
- Students will identify predominant ideas during the listening passage.
Student Writing Task:
- Students will write a minimum of one paragraph using a topic sentence, supporting
details, explanation of supporting details and concluding sentence.
- Students will use various forms of writing techniques to complete worksheets, graphic
organizers and charts.

Procedures:
- Students and teachers will first utilize the Immigration Graphic Organizer to brainstorm
on some words and concepts that remind students of the topic of immigration.
- Students use the KWL chart (What you know, what you want to know and what you learned)
to access and assess prior knowledge.
- Students and teachers will discuss and define vocabulary as a group. Teacher will
facilitate a final definition that the entire class agrees on.
- While listening to the passage during the listening activity, students will use the A/B
chart to assist them in taking notes. This will be a two member team activity.
- Students will use the Summary Chart with "wh" questions to assist them in
gathering and organizing their ideas on the topic they will summarize.
- Homework - for homework, student will interview a person of their choice on the topic of
immigration. Their interview will be guided, but not limited to questions provided by the
teacher on the interview worksheet.
- Students will engage in an extended activity for the purpose of further benefits and
contributions of famous immigrants to our nation.
- Follow up lesson.
Assessment/ Evaluation : Essay writing of one paragraph.
