Mount Vernon High School is rich in history. The original high
school opened its classroom doors in 1894 to 75 students on the
top floor of Lincoln Elementary School. Since then, the school has
conferred diplomas upon over 44,879 graduates. Today, the high school
consists of an enormous physical plant that houses 2,500+ students
in grades nine through twelve. This population is 83.4% African
American, 7.5% Caucasian, 8.5% Hispanic, 0.5% Asian/Pacific Islander
and 0.1% American Indian. Among this group are recent arrivals from
42 nations, including 900 young people from 14 islands in the Caribbean.
The school's professional staff consists of 191 individuals.
Mount Vernon High School takes pride in its long and noteworthy
history. Among our many distinguished graduates are such luminaries
as Earl Tatum, former NBA superstar; Art Carney, Academy Award winning
actor; E.B. White, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Charlotte's
Web; and Terrie Williams, the publicist for Johnny Cochran and Eddie
Murphy. Although the school enjoys this legacy, it realizes that
we must prepare for change as we look toward the future. Our charge
is to work diligently toward empowering our students to live and
function in a society that is technologically advanced and globally
interconnected. As we celebrate the past, we are also charting the
future.
Our school's mission is to raise skills, knowledge, and opportunity
of every person in the MVHS community. Our students will become
productive members of society by creating a climate characterized
by high expectations, respect for academic excellence, mutual respect,
caring and personal support. We are preparing our students for the
challenges they will face in the new millennium. We are building
partnerships among students, parents, educators and the community
that, once formed, will mold and shape the lives and minds of our
future leaders. Our students will be prepared to assume their rightful
place in the future management of the world.
