The system has been configured so that the default directory is the user’s home directory. However, you will see from the list that there are other drive locations: D (CD drive); C (the computer’s hard drive); Desktop (a special folder on the computer’s hard drive.)

Saving to either the home or shared network drives is the best way to manage files since files saved to a hard drive live on that particular machine. To access a file stored locally, you will need to work from that machine only. Saving files to the network assures immediate access to your work from any computer in the building.
