Text Box: Kindness and the Earth…
Last year we began a multi-year character education project that focused on the concept of being kind. To kick-off this endeavor we created and dedicated a Kindness Garden which is located outdoors behind our computer lab. Our custodial staff worked long hours to create the site for the garden and our wonderful P.T.A. provided the benches and plantings to create the area into an outdoor classroom. This year as last year, our students will continue to write down acts of kindness that they observe which will be deposited in kindness jars in the main hallway and in the primary wing. The P.T.A. will again donate monies to be used for more shrubs for the garden based on the amount of kindness slips generated by our students.
This year, the concept of kindness is being expanded to encompass kindness to the environment. The character education committee has joined with our earth committee with the purpose of teaching our children to be “kind” to each other and to our ecosystem. Recycling is being stressed through cultural arts programs, student council initiatives and use of recycling bins for plastics and papers in each classroom. Over time, our objective is to enable each child to feel connected to each other and to their physical environment through acts of kindness.

In the classroom…
In September we have completed our teaching of the state mandated Good Touches Bad Touches curriculum to our fourth graders. We will be adding to that lesson later in the month with the addition of a separate lesson on how to keep children safe on the internet. Fourth grade parents will be invited to an evening presentation on October 25th at 7:00 pm. Letters will be coming home soon so please save the date!
