Text Box: The opportunity to help others, particularly during the holiday season, helps our young leaders understand how they can positively impact the lives of other people.

During the past month our students have been actively engaged in demonstrating acts of kindness to others in our local and international communities. Food items deposited in the canoe provided Thanksgiving meals to 97 families in the immediate area. Gently used sneakers that were collected for two weeks are now in transit to Nicaragua so that students there can wear shoes to school. Through these endeavors, our Concord Road students are able to recognize how their kind deeds can help others both near and far.

In addition to being a good citizen by helping others, our fourth grade students also understood how to make responsible decisions when navigating the internet. All of these classes received a full hour lesson regarding internet safety. We actively discussed various age appropriate web-sites and what to do if something inappropriate appears on a web-site. At the end of each lesson, every student was given a family contract to be signed by the student and a parent which provides a framework for discussion about rules for computer use at home.

As we begin 2008, it is clear that our students on all grade levels are beginning to think about how they can be kind to others and also how to be responsible members of their community. We look forward to a New Year filled with more opportunities that will help each student to know that they can make a positive difference and be responsible citizens, be it in the community or on the internet.
