Abby Wambach
When Abby was in high school she played soccer and basketball but she concentrated on soccer at the University of Florida. Abby was a soccer star at Florida, scoring 96 goals, and ten hat tricks! She was all conference for four years straight and led the Gators to the NCAA Final Four in her senior year. One of the national team coaches convinced her that she could make the senior national team if she worked really hard and she made it. The Washington Freedom drafted Abby and Mia Hamm became her friend and role model. Mia taught her how to stay focused when opponents were trying to steal the ball or knock her down. Abby worked hard and she and Mia became really dangerous together. In 2003, Abby started all five Women’s World Cup matches. In 2004, Abby was named 2004 U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year! Abby describes herself as a goofball but she leaves that off the field. She likes playing video games, music, and reading. I’d love to get Abby Wambach’s autograph, play a little one-on-one with her, and have her teach me a few things!
