Nestled in a beautiful park setting, Hillside
is a United States Department of Education Blue Ribbon School providing a
warm, caring and nurturing atmosphere. Home to about 600 students, the
population is diverse and classes are arranged heterogeneously. Special
needs students participate in main-stream classrooms and positive
self-concepts are developed in an environment designed to promote academic
learning. The instructional program is geared to meet the wide range of
students learning styles and needs. Teachers use a variety of approaches
in their instructional programs, including new and innovative practices as
well as more traditional methods. The curriculum consists of Language
Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Spanish, Music, Art, Physical
Education, Health, Technology, and Library Skills, all of which are
integrated in a multi-disciplinary approach. All students work in the
Computer Lab, Science Lab, Art Studio, and Library/ Multimedia Center.
Seamlessly interwoven into the regular curriculum is the T.O.P.S. (Tools
Of Problem Solving) curriculum, which teaches social decision-making and
problem-solving skills and places a strong emphasis on social and
emotional learning.
At Hillside, children are encouraged to
explore and inquire. The development and promotion of academic and
