The transition from childhood to adolescence is a challenging time. Interested in exploring and learning about many different areas while developing an increasing ability to deal with complex concepts, middle school students are also concerned with social interaction and peer acceptance. Within the Middle School's structured,

nurturing environment, each student is offered opportunities to develop and practice personal responsibility, accountability, initiative, and respect for others.

Recognizing and understanding the needs of the middle school student, staff provide for social growth in an appropriate and supportive environment while implementing a rigorous curriculum. Students are exposed to many academic disciplines. Annually, the Middle School’s performance on the English/Language Arts assessment test is among the best in the state.

In addition to the strong academic program offered at the Middle School, needs and abilities of students are met through special education classes and accelerated programs. A Social and Emotional Learning program teaches students how to acknowledge their feelings, manage their emotions, delay impulses, be sensitive to others and consider their peers' perspectives.  Students are challenged to explore, investigate and reach conclusions with the confidence that they will be supported in all endeavors. The enthusiasm of the Middle School students is evident by their participation in many co-curricular and extra-curricular activities including:

• Junior Student Council

• Student Newspaper

• Computer Club

• Geography and Spelling Bees

• Foreign Language Clubs

• Orchestra, Chorus, and Band

• Arts-In-Education Programs

• Annual Theatrical Performances

• Interscholastic Sports Programs

• Chess Club

• Art Club

• Intramural Programs

Philosophy statement

The Farragut Middle School recognizes the uniqueness and importance of a middle school education in assisting children in the transition from childhood to adolescence.  The middle school is a bridge between the elementary self-contained classroom and the high school's departmentalization.  Within the Middle School's  structured, nurturing environment, each child is offered opportunities to develop and practice personal responsibility, accountability, initiative, and respect for others.

The Farragut Middle School is dedicated to balancing and enhancing each individual's social, personal, and intellectual growth and to the development of a positive self-concept.  The home, school and community will work cooperatively to develop the talents, abilities, and attitudes of each child.

The Middle School staff adopted this philosophy statement in 1990. We encourage parents to help us work towards the goals above, and to participate in their child’s education through:

·    Parent/teacher conferences at regularly scheduled times and additional times as needed

·    Monthly calendars, newsletters and other informational materials sent home from school

·    Contact with teachers and counselors as concerns arise

·    Contact with the Liaison Committee Members whose names and phone numbers will be included in the Fall mailing

·    Board of Education meetings
