The second annual Dancing with OUR Stars, the EHS version of the popular ABC show, drew hundreds of fans to the event. Organized by the tenth grade, the contest paired students and teachers who performed a variety of dances, including salsa, merengue, cha-cha, swing and hip-hop. The event raised over $11,000 for Gilda’s Club in White Plains. Dance instruction was provided by Andrea’s Dance Studio.
Simona Fava and Ornella Salza, 8th grade students of Mrs. Lina Astarita, placed fourth on the Level 1 National Italian Contest Exam. They will receive a certificate and a monetary award of $50 from the American Association of Teachers of Italian.
Eastchester High School alumnus Robert Russell ’51, presented a wooden Eagle to High School Principal Dr. Jeffrey Capuano and Business Teacher Phyllis Rothschild at the May Board of Education meeting. The Eagle, hand carved by Mr. Russell, will be mounted outside the high school gym. Robert Russell has been active in the community for many years. He has been honored numerous times for his contributions to the community, including being named Eastchester Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1982 and receiving the Eastchester Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship award in 1987.
Six EHS seniors won awards at WESEF, the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair. Awards were presented to:
Nirmal Nair - 2nd place in the Earth Science category for his project Determination of a diagenetic origin of Ir anomalies at the Triassic - Jurassic Boundary.
Neha Bhattacharjee - US Army award for "Top Projects in Life Sciences" for the relationship between mutations of presenilin 1 found in the mitochondria associated membrane and the development of familial Alzheimer’s disease.
Thomas Holek - Philips Award for Exceptional Research, awarded to projects that focus on improving people’s lives, for The disruption of CD81 and PKC interaction induces growth arrest in glioma cells.
Michael Hua - Psychogenics Pharmaceuticals Neurobiology Award - awarded to superior projects in Clinical, Biochemical, or Behavioral neurobiology - one of the top 5 projects in neurobiology, for Evidence for expression and function of corticotropin-releasing factor receptor type 1 in pre-synaptic nerve endings.
Chris Perrone - Ciba Specialty Chemicals Excellence in Science - awarded to outstanding projects in each category for A Cumulative Study on the Effects of Pre-Existing Factors on Pilonidal Sinus Disease.
Lisa Schumacher - The Walter Kass Memorial Award - for exceptional behavioral science projects - awarded to the top 10 projects (out of over 40 behavioral projects), for The Impact of Participation in Sports on Body Dissatisfaction.
HS students Lisa Schumacher and Christopher Perrone have been selected semifinalists in the Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition, a national competition where students submit their epidemiological research. They will each win $1000 scholarships. Lisa won for her project The Impact of Participation in Sports on Body Dissatisfaction. Christopher won for his project A Cumulative Study on the Effects of Pre-Existing Factors on Pilonidal Sinus Disease.
Former New York Jets player Dennis O’Sullivan addressed EHS athletes and parents on the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle free of drugs, alcohol, and steroids. The program, which was very well received by the students, was organized by the Eagles Sports Club and sponsored by the Eastchester School Foundation and the Community Fund.
The last weekend in March the Class of 2009 hosted the 3rd annual "Junior Stay-Awake-Athon" in the gym. 105 students (and 20 faculty members working various shifts) stayed up all night to raise money for the Class of '09 and for the National Autism Association. The students’ goal is to help fund public awareness and treatments for this disease, estimated to occur in 1 in every 150 children. Donations are still being accepted. The Eastchester High School Guidance Department has started a new program called Career Café. The department is holding a series of four career related lunches, made possible by a grant from BEPT. Students will have the opportunity to have lunch with career professionals from different areas. The first one, on October 26, featured lunch with three attorneys from different fields of law.
AH 5th grade classes attended a mock legislature at the Westchester County Board of Legislators. The event was hosted by our County Legislator Vito J. Pinto. The students assumed the roles of the County Board- Chair, Clerk, Legislators. Sitting in the legislators Board Room, the students debated topics including school uniforms, mandated healthy lunches, and cell phone bans on school grounds.
Players Club President Liz DeVito, Director John Gwardyak, Judy Fix, Bunny Rappaport and Anna DiLegge were thanked by the BOE for their efforts to raise money to buy new stage curtains.
Greenvale students in Mr. Walsh’s classes in grades 4 and 5 participated in the local Punt, Pass and Kick competition. Local winners included, in their age groups, (Girls): Olivia Medico, Claudia DeLorenzo, Catherine Collins, Anna Hughes, Olivia Hughes, Julie Palumberi and (Boys): Andrew Schultz, Frank Calabro, Andrew McGahren, Jared Goldstein, Liam Gredler and John Landseidel. Olivia Medico and Anna Hughes received 4th place awards at Giant Stadium. Andrew Schultz won 1st place and has moved onto the National Championship.

Eastchester High School students presented a check in the amount of $4,000 to Jim Kalloran, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity. In addition to raising money for Habitat for Humanity, students will participate in an upcoming walk and will be working on rebuilding homes in Mamaroneck destroyed by the flooding last spring.
